Frequently asked questions

Everything people usually ask before commissioning a painting. If your question isn't here, the concierge will answer it in person.

How does a custom portrait work?

You tell the concierge what you'd like painted and share a reference photo or two. We match you with an artist whose hand suits the piece, quote you on the spot, and a 40% deposit reserves your artist. They paint, you watch it develop through work-in-progress photos, and only after you approve the finished painting do you settle the balance. Then it ships to your door.

What kind of photo works best?

Sharp, well-lit, and close enough to see the details you care about — eyes, fur, the lines of a face. Natural daylight beats flash, and eye-level beats looking down. Don't worry if your favorite photo isn't perfect: send a few options and your artist will tell you honestly which one will paint best, or work from several at once.

How does pricing and the 40% deposit work?

Every piece is quoted up front — the price depends on the size and complexity, and the concierge shows you the exact figure before you commit. A 40% deposit reserves your artist and starts the work. The remaining balance is only due after you've seen the finished painting in photos and approved it. You never pay in full for something you haven't seen.

Can I ask for changes?

Yes — that's the point of the work-in-progress photos. You'll see the painting as it develops and can ask for adjustments along the way. Reasonable revision passes are included; most pieces need at most a small touch-up before approval. Nothing ships until you've said yes.

How long does it take?

Most pieces take one to three weeks at the easel, depending on size and detail — each artwork page shows its typical turnaround. Add shipping time on top. If you're painting toward a date (a birthday, an anniversary), mention it to the concierge and we'll tell you honestly whether it's doable.

How does shipping work?

Your painting ships as a carefully rolled canvas in a sturdy tube, with tracking, to almost anywhere in the world. Rolling is the safest way for an oil painting to travel and is how galleries ship them too. Depending on your country, customs duties or import taxes may apply on arrival — these are set by your local authorities, not by us.

What about framing?

Any local framer can stretch and frame a rolled canvas — it's routine work and usually inexpensive. We include framing tips with every delivery so you know exactly what to ask for. Choosing the frame in person, against your own wall and light, almost always beats anything we could pick from afar.

What's the difference between originals and made-to-order pieces?

Originals are finished paintings, already on the canvas — one exists, and when it sells, it's gone. They ship right away with no deposit-and-approval cycle. Made-to-order pieces are painted for you after you commission them: same artists, same hands, but the painting starts when you do. The gallery marks which is which.

What's the feng shui collection about?

Some of our artists paint pieces informed by feng shui traditions — water for flow, mountains for steadiness, colors and elements chosen with a room's energy in mind. We treat it lightly and honestly: our feng shui guidance is aesthetic inspiration for a harmonious space — not divination, and we make no promises of fortune. If you simply love how the pieces feel, that's reason enough.

How does the 14-day happiness guarantee work?

If your painting arrives and it isn't what you hoped, tell us within 14 days of delivery. We'll work with you to put it right — often a revision pass with your artist — and if we can't make you happy, we'll refund you. We'd rather repaint a canvas than have one you don't love on your wall.
